A safe place for women threatened by physical, emotional or sexual violence in the home

Frequently Asked Questions

Who runs the refuge?

The Refuge is run as a Manx Charity on the Isle of Man.

We are staffed entirely by volunteers and one co-ordinator. As a small, locally registered charity we are not able to provide the full range of services offered by Women's Aid in the UK.

However, whilst we are not counsellors, we are good listeners and can give support when needed, all in the strictest confidence.
What does the Refuge offer?

A warm, clean, safe-house with a direct line to the main Police Station.

Assistance with getting in touch with the other organisations you may need help from regarding matters, such as:
- Housing
- Benefits
- Legal matters
- Counselling services
- Medical services
- Victim Support

The Isle of Man Children's Centre are also very helpful and supportive.
What is the Refuge like?

The Refuge is shared accommodation for women and their children. Each resident has their own room (shared with their children) with their own key.

There is also a shared living room, kitchen, bathroom and shower room, laundry facilities and a children's playroom.

The house is centrally heated and is warm, clean and bright with lots of home comforts.

We expect residents to look after themselves (as they would in their own home) and keep the house clean. There is a set of house rules that everyone who stays at the Refuge has to abide by.

We maintain a stock of items for those who may arrive without their own clothing toiletries etc .
Who can stay at the Refuge?

The Refuge is for any woman who needs to get away from violence, threats, intimidation or bullying - either physical, sexual, psychological or financial - or who simply does not feel safe in their own home.

It doesn't matter who the abuser is - it could be your husband, wife, partner, ex-partner, ex-husband relative or anyone who shares a domestic environment .

This is a safe house for families to stay until they feel able to move on.

The address is kept secret to protect all the women who live there - MALE VISITORS ARE NOT ALLOWED WHOEVER THEY ARE.
How long can you stay at the Refuge?

The Refuge is intended to provide temporary accommodation in circumstances where there is an immediate threat or action of abuse.
What form does our support take?

As previously mentioned, residents can be put in touch with various people and agencies who can help them on a range of matters.

Confidentiality and security are of the utmost importance.

On a very practical level, we keep a stock of bedding, towels and personal items for those of you who may be starting from scratch and can help source other items if needed.

We also have a good working relationship with the Police who are very supportive.
